Gender and media: a global forum organized by UNESCO
From December 2 to 4, 2013, a global forum about women in the media was held in Bangkok, Thailand. The Forum, organized by UNESCO, follows up on the strategic objectives established at the United Nations' Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995. Indeed, the topic of "Women and the Media" is one of the priorities set by the Beijing Declaration and the Programme for Action which was adopted at the end of the conference.
How to "increase the participation and access of women to expression and decision-making in and through the media and new technologies of communication" (strategic objective J.1) ? How to "promote a balanced and non-stereotyped portrayal of women in the media"(strategic objective J.1) ? It is around these issues that the Global Forum on Media and Gender gathered institutions, NGOs and media companies to foster debate and encourage the sharing of best practices. The Forum will lay the foundation for a Global Alliance for Media and Gender.
