Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2001, The Son's Room is a film about a mourning process, showing a family that must cope with tragedy when the teenage son, Andrea, dies while diving. Nanni Moretti himself takes the role of the father, Giovanni, while the mother is played by the Italian actress Laura Morante and the boy's sister, Irene, is played by Jasmine Trinca.

In one of the film's first scenes, the family is in the car singing an Italian cult favorite, "Insieme a te non ci sto più" ("I'm no longer with you") by vocalistCaterina Caselli. In addition, some of the film's more lyrical scenes feature a song by the British musician Brian Eno, "By This River."
